NHS Prescriptions for Over-the-Counter (OTC) Medicines
Following national NHS guidance, our GPs will not routinely prescribe medicines for minor conditions that can be treated with products available over the counter.
This includes treatments for:
-
Coughs, colds, sore throats
-
Dry eyes
-
Hay fever and allergies
-
Mild skin conditions (e.g. acne, eczema, nappy rash)
-
Head lice, dandruff and more.
These items are widely available in pharmacies and supermarkets, often at a lower cost than an NHS prescription. Pharmacists can offer expert advice and help you choose the right treatment without needing a GP appointment.

This policy is supported locally by West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB) to encourage self-care for minor illnesses and reduce unnecessary prescribing.
