Ordering repeat prescriptions on the NHS App

How to order Repeat Prescriptions

The best way to order your repeat prescriptions is through your NHS Account on the NHS App

To do this you will need to ensure that you are fully registered with the surgery and have had the prescription previously signed-off for repeat usage.

To use an NHS account , you need to have an NHS login

  • If you already have an account you can login here
  • You can create a new account here

When logged into the NHS App, you can select the ‘order repeat prescription’ button.

Step-by-step instructions for patients

Getting started

You can easily choose where your prescriptions are sent and order at a time that suits you with the NHS App.

First, you will need to download and register on the app. Ask a member of your GP surgery's team for the 'Getting started with the NHS App' leaflet or visit: nhs.uk/helpmeapp

Ordering repeat prescriptions

Once you have logged into the app:

  1. Select the 'Prescriptions' icon in the bar at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Choose which pharmacy your prescriptions will be sent to. This is called your 'nominated pharmacy'. Look at the 'Choosing your pharmacy' section of this guide to choose or change your pharmacy.
  3. Select the green 'Order a prescription' button at the top of the prescriptions page.
  4. The next page asks: 'What type of prescription do you want to order?' You can only order repeat prescription items on the NHS App. So, if you have one, choose 'A repeat prescription' and select 'Continue'.
  5. Check the prescription is going to the right pharmacy. If not, look at the 'Choosing your pharmacy' section of this guide. If the pharmacy is the right one, select 'Continue'.
  6. The next screen shows the medicines available for you to request. Choose the medicines you need and select 'Continue'.
  7. Check your order and nominated pharmacy are correct. Then select 'Confirm and order prescriptions' .
  8. You are finished. Your request is sent to the GP surgery for approval and then sent to your nominated pharmacy for collection.

You can also access these services at www.nhs.uk/app on your desktop or laptop

Choosing your pharmacy

The pharmacy you choose your prescriptions to be sent to is called your 'nominated pharmacy'.  Here's how to change it

  1. Select the 'Prescriptions' icon at the bottom of the screen.

  3. Select the green 'Change your nominated pharmacy' button.
  4. Select 'High street pharmacies'. It is not possible to nominate an online-only pharmacy in the NHS App.
  5. Search using your postcode.
  6. Select a pharmacy.  Future prescriptions will be sent to this pharmacy.

Viewing your orders

  1. Select the 'Prescriptions' icon at the bottom of the screen.

Order Prescriptions using SystmOnline

You can use Patient Online Services to order your repeat prescriptions and view your medications. You will need to register to use SystmOnline and once registered you can use fingerprint or facial recognition. You can access SystmOnline by clicking on the links below.

SystmOnline Patient Online Services

You may be asked to nominate a pharmacy to collect a prescription from, allowing you to organise a collection or delivery from a pharmacy close to your home. It’s worth noting, not all pharmacies may be listed.

Once nominated and re-ordered, you’ll be able to collect your medicine in person when it is ready. Some pharmacies may also deliver.

You can of course also order your prescription in other ways, such as:

  • via PATCHs: Contact your GP via PATCHS
  • via SystmOnline: Contact your GP via SystmOnline
  • in person at the surgery
  • by posting the paper slip into the box at the surgery.

Repeat Prescriptions

Repeat prescriptions may be issued in agreement with your doctor.

We do not take phone requests unless you are housebound.

Please allow 2 full working days before collecting the prescription

We can post your prescription to you if you provide us with an SAE.

Your medication should be reviewed annually, more often if the doctor recommends. You will be advised of this date. The review appointment should be separate from other queries.

Prescriptions Charges

Find out more about prescription charges on nhs.uk.

If you have to pay for four or more prescription items in three months, or more than 14 items in 12 months, you may find it cheaper to buy a pre payment certificate.

  • Coughs
  • Colds
  • Sore throats
  • Tummy trouble
  • Aches and pains

Pharmacies will also take your Blood Pressure and report this back to the surgery, it is recommended that patients purchase their own Home Blood Pressure Monitor so that if requested they can provide the information quickly.

Many pharmacies are open until late and at weekends. You do not need an appointment.

Most pharmacies have a private room where you can discuss issues with pharmacy staff in private.
